Lost Walkers on Cader Idris

29/6/2023

At around 9:30 p.m. Team call-handlers were made aware of a group of walkers in difficulty on Cader Idris

The party of nine, mostly in their early 20's and from London, started from Ty Nant with the intention of camping on the mountain.

Having reached the summit, two members of the group decided to descend via steep ground to Llyn Cau. During their attempt to return directly to the summit, the pair encountered steep ground and were unable to proceed. A further member of the party went to locate and assist the stranded two. When none of the three had returned to the summit after some considerable time, and being unable to make further contact with their friends, the summit party called for help.

Team members deployed to both Ty Nant and Minffordd car parks. At Ty Nant, Team volunteers confirmed the presence of two vehicles in the car-park, then proceeded to the summit  via the Pony Path to locate the main group of six.

With PhoneFind technology proving unsuccessful, the Minffordd search party headed up to Cwm Cau to attempt to locate the missing group of three. Suspecting that this might easily develop into a technical rope rescue situation, South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Team were put on standby to assist.

During further discussion with the main group, it became evident that contact had been re-established with the missing party of three and a WhatsApp live location link was sent to the call-handler. This information showed that the group of three were by the fence line close to Mynydd Moel. Instructions were given to start to walk down the fence line and rescuers would work their way up to intercept. Once located, the group was given warm clothing and food before being accompanied back down to Minffordd car-park.

The Ty Nant group reached the summit shelter and made contact with the main group of six. The group was checked-over before starting the descent back down to Ty Nant. Being poorly equipped for the terrain and weather, this was a very slow  process for the group.

On arrival back at Minffordd, the group of 3 were transported to Ty Nant to be reunited with their friends coming down the north side. Everyone was safely off the mountain by 3:15 a.m.

Women Taken Ill on Cader Idris

24/6/2023

Shortly after 1:00 p.m. Team call-handlers were made aware of a walker in her 30's taken ill on Cader idris.

The party of 3 friends had started up the Pony Path from Ty Nant carpark. As they got higher on the mountain, one of the party started to feel unwell, reporting severe abdominal pain and vomiting.

With no sign of the episode abating, the group called for Mountain Rescue assistance.
The team deployed to Ty Nant, and a hasty party of two made way to the casualty location, whilst others remained in readiness to carry up equipment as required.

Team casualty-carers undertook a medical assessment the woman, whose condition was already starting to improve following self-medication prior to their arrival. As she continued to improve, the decision was made to try a short walk. This went well, so after a brief break she then undertook a longer section, and then down off the hill.

With advice given about seeking follow up assessments, the woman was discharged into the care of her friends.

Everyone was safely off the hill by 3:45 p.m.

Overdue Walker on Cader Idris

15/6/2023

At around 7:45 p.m., Team call-handlers were made aware over a long-overdue walker on Cader Idris.

Starting out at 10:30 a.m. the 71 year old man had left his walking companion at Llyn Cau while he pushed on to the summit. Some 7 hours after then had separated, the man had not returned and remained uncontactable, and the alarm was raised.

The Team's swift-water rescue group were having a dry-session practising rope-work in a field adjacent to the Minffordd car-park so were quickly on scene. By interviewing other returning walkers, it was quickly established that the man had been spotted back at lake-level, making slow but steady progress down-hill. When a further 20 minutes had elapsed with still no sign of the man, two of the water team who had hill-kit in their vehicles were dispatched up Minffordd steps to check everything was still progressing safely.  They encountered the man about 15 minutes later and escorted down the last section of his journey.

Everyone was safely off the hill by 9:30 p.m.
