An early Start.....

27/7/2015

Picture
At around 6:00 a.m. Search Managers from the Team were made aware of a vulnerable adult missing from a residential home near Tywyn.

The 18 year old woman had already absented herself the previous day, and was found to have left the home again at about 3:30 a.m.

North Wales Police initiated the search, and requested air assistance from Rescue 936, and ground searchers from the Team. At about 7:15, as search parties were being tasked, the helicopter identified an infra-red target, and the lady was located shortly afterwards.

A False Start......

26/7/2015

At around 9:00 p.m. the Team was made aware of a lost Duke of Edinburgh party on "a track in Snowdonia."

With little detail to go on, call handlers set about trying to match the information given with a likely location, and after a bit of head-scratching it was concluded that the party was on the hills west of Beddgelert.

With this location outside the Team's area, the called was passed on to Aberglaslyn MRT who sucessfully located the group by about 11:30 p.m.

Collapsed Woman at Blue Lake

19/7/2015

At around 1:40 p.m. on Saturday 18th July, Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team was requested to help the Welsh Ambulance Service attend to a casualty at the Blue Lake quarry above Fairbourne on the Mawddach Estuary.

The casualty, a 61 year old woman with a history of angina, had collapsed at the popular beauty-spot, and was unreachable by road-based ambulance.

The lady was attended to by two off-duty paramedics who happened to be at the location, and Team members living in the vicinity were quickly on-scene with further resources.

Owing to the severity of the woman's condition and the expected arrival time of an ambulance, it was decided to request air support from Rescue 936. On arrival at the quarry, the aircraft was unable to land close to the casualty because of a parked vehicle, and instead put down at the foot of the hill. Team personnel, along with one of the paramedics, evacuated the casualty down to the valley floor by LandRover to meet the waiting aircraft. The casualty was quickly taken on board and transferred to Bronglais hospital for further treatment.

Injured Child near Aberdyfi

6/7/2015

At about 1:45 p.m. Volunteers from Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team received a request to assist the Welsh Ambulance Service in the rescue of an injured child near Aberdyfi.

The 12 year old boy had fallen from a swing into a streambed in the hills north of Penhelig on the outskirts of the town. Landing badly, he had seriously injured his ankle.

The incident occurred almost immediately adjacent to where the Team's van is stored, and Team members working at the nearby Outward Bound activity centre were able to get on scene quickly, bringing along some extra muscle in the shape of staff from the centre.

The child was stretchered out from the gorge and passed on to the waiting ambulance for transfer to Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth. It transpires that there was some ligament damage to the ankle, but thankfully it was not broken.

All rescues throw up challenges and surprises as they develop, and this was to be no exception; one of the first Team members on scene quickly realised that the casualty was his son.

At about 3:30 p.m. , volunteers from Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team were made aware of a woman with a badly injured ankle on Cadair Idris.

The 17 year old woman was taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh activity with her DoE supervisor and other experienced adults. Whilst on the Mynydd Moel area of the Cadair Idris range her foot went into a hole causing her to fall and twist the joint.

Given the location high on the mountain and the nature of the injury it was decided to request helicopter assistance. The scene was attended by Rescue 936, part of the newly operational rescue service operated by Bristows, and the casualty was evacuated to Aberystwyth for further hospital based care.

Other members of the party were escorted off the hill by team volunteers. Everyone was off the hill by 5:45 p.m.
