Ankle Injury on Cader Idris

29/7/2022

Shortly before 4:00 p.m. Team call-handlers were made aware of a woman with an ankle injury on Cader Idris.

The woman, part of a family group of 5 from the Coventry area, was on the Minffordd path traversing the south ridge of the mountain when she suffered a bad sprain which left her unable to walk.

A stretcher extraction from this point on the mountain would be prolonged and labour intensive. With limited availability from Team volunteers, a request for assistance was placed with our neighbours, South Snowdonia Search & Rescue who were able to boost available numbers significantly. Additionally a request for aircraft assistance was placed, and Coastguard helicopter Rescue936 was granted to attend.

There was the possibility that the aircraft could be redirected if a more serious injury or incident occurred elsewhere in the region, so a party of Team volunteers started to make their way up the mountain to reach the casualty should the aircraft be re-tasked.

In the event, the aircraft was able to attend and transported the entire group to a landing site at the foot of the mountain where they were met by Team volunteers.

Everyone was safely off the mountain by 6:15 p.m.

"Intoxicated" Males on Cader Idris

24/7/2022

Shortly before 3:00 p.m., call-handlers from the Team received a report of an intoxicated and unconscious man on Cader Idris.

The man, in his 20's and one of a party of eight, had collapsed on the mountain and his party, also potentially intoxicated, had left him there to raise the alarm.

Through further conversations with the party, Team volunteers were able to obtain a rough description of the man's location, different from the original information but coinciding with reports of shouting heard by other walkers coming off the mountain. Crucially, it also transpired that another member of the party was also missing on the mountain.

In unseasonably poor weather, volunteers were dispatched up the hill to begin searching the area in question, and key equipment was carried up the mountain as it arrived.

The initial search parties quickly encountered the man reported as being unconscious, but now back on his feet, and he was escorted down off the mountain while the search for his companion continued. With little information to work with, and the initial searches of the most likely routes drawing a blank, the search started to open up into more remote areas of the mountain, and other assets such as search-dogs were starting to be mobilised.

One of the search parties reported a distant light coloured object in a gully to the south of the initial search area, and spotters working from the foot of the mountain confirmed that it appeared to be a person. The party made their way across difficult terrain to reach the man, who was alive but had sustained significant injuries in what looked like a tumbling fall.

The casualty was stabilised as a request for aircraft support was placed. Fortunately the cloud base had lifted sufficiently for Coastguard Rescue936 to reach the location, and the injured man was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd for further assessment and treatment.

A total of 17 Team volunteers were involved in the various search and rescue operations, and everyone was safely down off the hill by 8:45 p.m.

Ankle Injury on Cader Idris

17/7/2022

At around 2:30 p.m. the Team was made aware of a woman with an injured ankle and possible heat related illness on Cader Idris.

The woman, in her 40's and from the Netherlands, was walking with family when she slipped, injuring her ankle. She was in significant pain and also complaining of dizziness. Whilst the two might have been related, the prevailing hot weather meant that potentially serious heat related illness could not be ruled out.

With this in mind, along with the potential risk to our volunteers of an arduous stretcher carry in the high temperatures, a request was made for air-support. Coastguard Rescue 187 was granted and arrived on scene shortly after 4:00 p.m. Following assessment by Team casualty carers and the winchman paramedic, the woman was airlifted to Bronlais Hospital for further investigation and treatment.

Everyone was safely off the hill by 5:30 p.m.

Missing Person Search in Coed y Brenin

10/7/2022

Shortly before 8:00 p.m. the Team was requested to assist in an ongoing missing person search being conducted  by South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Team in the Coed y Brenin forest park.

Volunteers arrived at the scene and received taskings, but the rapidly developing situation meant they were put on hold as new information came in. A new report informed that a Search & Rescue Dogs Association trailing dog team had had a positive indication and were a following what was believed to be the person's trail. As they made good progression in what turned out to be the correct direction, a group of walkers by chance encountered the missing man, safe and well,  about 400m ahead.

The Team was stood down at around 11:30 p.m.

Missing Person Search near Aberdyfi

Shoulder Injury in Cwm Mynach

4/7/2022

Shortly after 3:00 p.m. the Team received a request from South Snowdonia MRT for assistance with a difficult stretcher extraction of an injured walker from woodland in Cwm Mynach.

The Team was put on standby as steep and overgrown slopes were assessed for potential routes out, but in the end it was concluded that a helicopter extraction was the best option.

Coastguard helicopter Rescue187 airlifted the casualty, and the Team was stood down.
