High Risk Missing Person on Cader Idris

30/8/2021

Shortly before 9:00 p.m. Team call-handlers received information suggesting that a vulnerable missing person was on Cader Idris.

The confusing picture, with inputs from three different Police Forces, suggested that the person was in crisis somewhere within our patch, and  their phone had connecting to masts suggesting the Cader Idris area.

The Team was put on standby, but at that point there was not enough information to start a search process. A phone-find link was sent to the missing person on the off-chance that their activity was a confused cry for help. Fortunately the person was able to respond, giving their location as the Minffordd  car-park. Police Officers were able to quickly attend and give the person suitable support, and the Team was stood down at around 9:40 p.m.

Leg Injury on Cader Idris

29/8/2021

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. call-handlers from the Team were made aware of third party reports of a man with a "broken leg" on Cader Idris.

Unable to contact the casualty directly, a group of Team volunteers was dispatched to investigate based on the information available, and the casualty was quickly located on open ground just beyond the top of the Minffordd steps.

The casualty had been walking with family when he slipped, injuring his knee leaving him unable to walk.

As the man was assessed, more Team volunteers brought up equipment in anticipation of the difficult evacuation down the Minffordd steps. In the event, Rescue187, the Coast-Guard helicopter based out of St. Athan, was made available and the casualty was uplifted and flown to Bronglais Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Everyone was safely off the hill by 8:00 p.m.

Injured Walker at Coed y Brenin

23/8/2021

Shortly before 1:00 p.m., the Team was requested to assist our neighbours at South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Team with a seriously injured walker at Coed y Brenin forest park.

The walker had fallen a significant distance onto rocks, and the rescue was a joint effort between a passing doctor, the Helimed crew, Coastguard helicopter R936, SSSRT and ourselves.

High Risk Missing Person near Borth

19/8/2021

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. , the Team was contacted by Dyfed Powys Police with a request to assist in the search for a high risk missing person near Borth.

Concerns had been raised over a 70 year old male who had been acting erratically over the previous few days and was now found to be missing from home.

As Team volunteers were starting to arrive on scene, the man returned home and at 4:30 a.m. the incident was closed.

Lost Walker on Aran Fawddwy

11/8/2021

Shortly after 7:00 p.m., Team call-handlers were made aware of a walker, lost and disoriented in the cloud on Aran Fawddwy.

With little information on the man’s location, attempts were made to pinpoint his position using phone find technology. The phone signal is at best patchy in that area, and with no response received the Team mobilised to start a search of likely paths.

As team members made their way to the area, confirmation was received that the man was in his vehicle driving home, and the search was stood-down.

Injured Motorcyclist near Penrhyn Coch

7/8/2021

Shortly before 12:30 p.m. Team call-handlers received a report from our neighbouring mountain rescue team at Brecon of an injured motorcyclist at Penrhyn Coch, near Aberystwyth.

The male in his 60 had sustained suspected chest and shoulder injuries following a crash whilst off-road riding.

With Dyfed Powys Police Officers already on scene, Team members deployed to the incident. The arrival on-scene of the first Team volunteers coincided that of the Welsh Ambulance Service. The casualty was assessed and treated by attending paramedics, and Team members then assisted with a stretcher carry to a waiting ambulance at the nearby road. The casualty was transported to hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Team members stood down at 14:20

Overdue Climbers on Cader Idris

4/8/2021

At around 10:15 p.m. the Team was contacted by NWP regarding an informant reporting 2nd-hand information about overdue climbers on Cader Idris.

Being unable to contact anyone directly involved in the incident, Team volunteers made their way to the Minffordd car-park to make further investigations.

The wife of one of the climbers was present, and reported she had last seen her husband and climbing partner at 3:00 p.m. at Llyn Cau. Their intention was, she said, to climb in the south-west corner of the Llyn in an area identified as being around Pen Coed Pillar. Her husband was described as an experienced climber, while his partner was less so, so she anticipated they would not be on anything too difficult. She reported them as being lightly equipped beyond their climbing kit.

With the possibility of crag-fast and benighted climbers, the assistance of Coastguard helicopter R936 was requested. The aircraft was granted, but was at that time refuelling in Liverpool. In the meantime, the plan was to send small teams to check above and below the area of the climb in order to locate the pair. As Team volunteers assembled, the first party was deployed up the hill, and fortunately encountered the missing climbers mid-way up the Minffordd steps.

The pair had underestimated or been misled by online resources about the difficulty of climb they were attempting, and it had taken much longer than anticipated. They were not well prepared for dealing with the extended time on the crag, and the situation was compounded by a flat mobile battery.

Everyone was safely off the mountain by 12:19 a.m.

Ankle injury on Cader Idris

4/8/2021

At around 4:00 p.m. the Team was made aware of a 13 year-old girl with an injured ankle on the Craig Cau saddle on Cader idris.

While Team volunteers prepared to approach from the west, Coastguard helicopter R936 dropped a winchman-paramedic to assess the situation. The casualty was down-lifted to the awaiting Team vehicles and collected by her mother shortly afterwards.
