The group had set out on the Minffordd path in the dark but had lost the route at Llyn Cau, and, finding themselves on steep loose ground, had spent the remainder of the night and subsequent morning on the upper slopes of the mountain. Unable to resolve their situation, the party eventually called for mountain rescue.
The group had reported their position as the north slopes of Cadair Idris, but after a phone conversation with a Team call-handler, it seemed more likely that they were actually on the screes of the southern slopes of Pen y Gader, high above Llyn Cau.
By chance, one of the Team Leaders was already on the mountain and, as it turned out, only a few hundred meters away from the lost party. He quickly established contact with the walkers, escorted them down to safer ground and then back to the Minffordd path, where they were strongly advised to continue down the mountain.
