The 2020s: Future in the making
At the time of writing, the decade is still fairly new, and undoubtedly great new chapters will unfold, but that is the job of others to report in the future. The following runs up to September 2023, our formal 50th Birthday
Recruitment and Training
The mentoring process for new recruits had variable success as it depended very much on how proactive individual mentors could be. In 2022, to standardise the experience, the mentoring process was abandoned in favour of placing the aspirant recruits under the care of a dedicated recruitment -team. In 2023 this was developed into a fairly intense couple of months of bespoke training where the recruits were exposed to all aspects of Team life, before being let loose on the rest of the team.
Operations
In 2020, Chris D stood down as TL and was succeeded by Phil Britton.
The Team: a benchmark for 2023
As of the 1st of September 2023, the Team had 49 members “on the books” comprised of 39 reporting as male and 10 as female. The average age of the 45 members who responded was 53, with 55 for the men and 41 for the women. The graph shows the distribution of those ages. We have yet to locate details of the make-up of the Team at its inception, but given that it was made up of OB instructors, it seems likely to have been a much younger Team, and, of its age, mostly male. We are not yet in a position to report gender equality in numbers, but the Team has seen an encouraging influx of female volunteers over the preceding four or five years, a number of which now occupy key roles within the Team committee.
