Walkers Lost on Cader Idris

29/1/2023

At around 3:45 p.m., call-handlers from the Team were made aware of a party of walkers lost on Cader Idris.

The group of 3 walkers and 2 dogs reported that they were climbing Cader Idris and while nearly at the summit, had lost the path in low cloud.

Using smartphone technology, the Team was able to establish that the group were in fact on the far-eastern end of the south ridge, around 2 km from the summit. With a good phone signal in this area, the party was given instructions on how to regain the path, and their progress was monitored remotely using PhoneFind protocols.

Once the party was safely back on the Minffordd path and no longer requiring assistance, the Team was stood down.

Stranded Motorists near Lake Vyrnwy

18/1/2023

At around 7:45 p.m., Team call-handlers were made aware of two stranded motorists near Lake Vyrnwy.

Given that the two were uninjured and not in any immediate danger, and both were at the road-side, the Team considered this was not an issue for Mountain Rescue, and that other agencies were better suited to dealing with the incident.

Knee Injury near Lake Vyrnwy

2/1/2023

Shortly after 5:00 p.m., Team call-handlers were made aware of an injured man near Rhiwargor falls at the head of Lake Vyrnwy.

The area is a notorious mobile phone  black-spot, and the informant, a walker who had encountered the party, had to travel 6 miles to a nearby hotel to raise the alarm. He had then returned to the casualty to further help stabilise the situation.

The injured man, in his late 50's, had slipped on a muddy section of path near the foot of the waterfall and injured his knee. He did not report much pain at rest but the knee would not support him when trying to walk. Having waited for the alarm to be raised, and then for the Team to reach him, he was also starting to feel the cold.

The injured knee was splinted for support, then the man was transported by stretcher to the car-park, where family members were able to transport him to further hospital-based assessment and treatment.

Everyone was off the hill and back at vehicles by 8:00 p.m.
