Man lost on Cadair Idris

30/8/2015

At around 12:30 p.m. call handlers were alerted to a man lost in the hills south of the Mawddach Estuary.

The 25 year old, from Exeter, had attended a social event in the area, but had decided to get away. Finding himself up on steep ground with very little idea of where he was, the man had ultimately called for mountain rescue. He believed himself to be on Cadair Idris but was only able to give the vaguest idea of his location.

Search parties were deployed to the most likely spots, whilst call handlers tried to make sense of the available information, with an intermittent phone signal allowing for some further questioning of the man. Team vehicles were deployed to open areas to sound sirens, and eventually the casualty was able to spot the Landrover. With the options greatly narrowed down, the Team was quickly able to identify the man's position, and gather him up, unharmed, from the hillside.

Man with Broken Arm in Dolgellau

At around 7:00 p.m. volunteers from Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team were requested to help the Welsh Ambulance Service (WAS) in the rescue of an injured man at Dolgellau.

The 73 year old man had slipped on wet stepping stones, crossing the Afon Arran near the centre of town, and had sustained what was believed to be a broken arm. The solo WAS paramedic attending the incident requested assistance in removing the man from the river.

As Team members made their way to the scene, the situation was resolved by WAS and the Dogellau Fire Service who transferred the casualty to the waiting ambulance. The Team was stood down at about 7:15 p.m.

Lost Walkers on Aran Fawddwy

At about 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday 12th August, call handlers from Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team were made aware of two missing walkers on Aran Fawddwy.

The two male walkers, aged 21 and 6, were part of a family party of five from London. The group had set out at around 4:00 p.m. from Cwm Cycwarch to climb Aran Fawddwy. Becoming disorientated on the tops, the group ended up on steep ground at the head of the valley, and the two missing walkers had separated from the rest of the party to find another path as the others started descending the steep hill side. When the two failed to reappear at the valley floor, the alarm was raised at a nearby farm house.

Although it was a still August evening, the clear sky meant that the temperature dropped quickly, and there was great concern for the missing party given the age of the youngest, and the fact that neither had any clothing or equipment suitable for the mountain environment.

A likely search area was identified, and parties of rescuers set off up the hill. The Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 936, was also made available, and began a sweep of the hilltops using an infra-red camera. At 12:30 a.m. Rescue 936 identified two targets near to one of the Aberdyfi search groups, was able to pick up the two walkers, and deposited them, cold but unharmed, back to their waiting family on the valley floor.

The Search Parties started making their way back down off the mountain, and although everyone was off the mountain by 2:00 a.m. a number of rescuers would not see their bed much before 3:00m a.m.

Girl with Dislocated Knee near Fairbourne

5/8/2015

At around 2:30 p.m.  volunteers from Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team were made aware of a 16 year old girl with a suspected dislocated knee at Pont Caletwr.

Initially the North East Wales Team had been tasked with the rescue, believing the casualty to be at a location of that name near Pentrefoelas. However, it was established that the actual location was south of Fairbourne and the rescue was passed over to the Aberdyfi Team.

The girl was part of an outdoor education centre group undertaking a gorge walking activity when she slipped on a rock in the riverbed and injured her knee. She was no longer able to place any weight on the leg and was in considerable pain.

Local Team Members were quickly on scene, giving pain relief, splinting the knee, and getting the casualty into a stretcher ready for the extraction.

The riverbed was an uneven and slippery surface to work on, and rather than try and move with the load, the stretcher was passed hand to hand down a line of stationary rescuers. At a suitable exit point the team got onto better ground and the casualty was moved down the sometimes steep and bracken-filled hillside to an awaiting ambulance for transport to Bronglais Hospital.
