Overdue Walkers on Cadair Idris

27/5/2015

At around 9:45 p.m. Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team were made aware of a couple of overdue walkers on Cadair Idris.

The pair, a father and his thirteen year old son, had set of up the Minffordd Path at 2:30 p.m. and made the summit by 5:30 p.m. As the evening wore on and darkness fell with no sign of the returning walkers, the wife of the man had become increasingly concerned  and contacted the police.

The Team started the process of sweeping the roads near likely exit points from the mountain, but almost as soon as the job was underway, news came through that the pair had turned up, safe and well, at their starting point and the team were stood down.

Missing Vulnerable Teenager on the Mawddach Estuary

27/5/2015

Just after midnight on Wednesday morning, the volunteers from Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team were put on standby to join an ongoing search of the Mawddach Estuary for a missing and vulnerable teenager.

The boy, from a residential unit near the estuary, had gone missing shortly after 11:00 p.m. He had also gone missing earlier in the day, with the stated aim of reaching the sea, so this was an area of concern for rescuers. As such Coastguard teams were called out and the Barmouth Lifeboat was also put on standby. In addition Police and RAF helicopters were in action over the water and search dog teams were making their way to the area.

At around 12:45 a.m. the boy was located, safe and well, and the team was stood down.

Lost Party on Cadair Idris

24/5/2015

At around 2 p.m. volunteers from Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team were made aware of a party of four walkers lost on Cadair Idris.

The group had set out on the Minffordd path in the dark but had lost the route at Llyn Cau, and, finding themselves on steep loose ground, had spent the remainder of the night and subsequent morning on the upper slopes of the mountain. Unable to resolve their situation, the party eventually called for mountain rescue.

The group had reported their position as the north slopes of Cadair Idris, but after a phone conversation with a Team call-handler, it seemed more likely that they were actually on the screes of the southern slopes of Pen y Gader, high above Llyn Cau.

By chance, one of the Team Leaders was already on the mountain and, as it turned out, only a few hundred meters away from the lost party. He quickly established contact with the walkers, escorted them down to safer ground and then back to the Minffordd path, where they were strongly advised to continue down the mountain.

Injured Forestry Worker at Coed y Brenin

At about 12:30 p.m. the volunteers of Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team  received a request from neighbouring South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Team to assist with the rescue of an injured forestry worker in the Coed y Brenin forest, north of Dolgellau.

The man had been working on steep ground within the forest when a previously felled tree started to move. The tree struck the worker causing serious injuries which included facial damage and suspected breaks to an arm and leg.

The Welsh Ambulance Service and the Welsh Air Ambulance also attended the incident but, owing to the difficult terrain, were unable to extract the casualty. The mountain rescue teams and paramedics were assisted by a SeaKing from RAF Valley who successfully winched the man up from the hillside and transported him to Ysbyty Gwynedd.
