Stranded Walkers on Cader Idris

30/12/2016

At around 3:50 p.m.  call-handlers from the Team were made aware of two walkers stuck in the summit hut on Cader Idris.

In poor conditions, and with inadequate equipment, the pair, a man and woman from Birmingham, had become soaked, cold and disorientated having reached the summit. Fortunately, other walkers intending to see-in the new year at the summit hut were able to offer warm and dry clothing to the pair and keep them in good spirits as they awaited rescue.

Working in conditions of wind, rain and poor visibility, a total of 14 rescue volunteers put their celebration plans on hold to attend the rescue. On reaching the hut, rescuers provided food and warm drinks before putting the walkers into more suitable clothing and then walking them down off the mountain. Everyone was off the hill shortly after 8:00 p.m.

At around 11:50 a.m.  call-handlers from the Team received a request to assist North Wales Ambulance Service in the extraction of an injured person from a difficult and inaccessible position near Fairbourne.

The casualty, an elderly lady, had slipped on a steep bank and suffered a head injury from the fall at a remote cottage in the hills above Arthog. Both the air-ambulance and a road ambulance were in attendance but neither could get close enough to move the woman. A small party of Team volunteers transferred the lady onto a stretcher and lowered her down the slope to a rough track, from where she was then carried to the waiting ambulance.

Injured Walker at Ganllywd

27/12/2016

At about 13:40 the Team was requested to assist our neighbours, South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Team, with the stretcher carry-out of an injured walker near Dolgellau.

The 16 year old female was walking above Ganllwyd when she slipped on a steep leaf covered path and injured her ankle. First aid was administered at the scene, and the casualty was transported up a steep and slippery path to awaiting team vehicles on a wheeled stretcher. She was taken by family to hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Benighted walkers on Cader Idris

11/12/2016

At 4.15 p.m. the Team was called to assist two lost walkers near the summit of Cader Idris.

The couple, a 24 year old woman and a 41 year old man, both from the Stafford area, had become disorientated in the cloud on their way down from the summit.  With the daylight fading they realised they were not going to find their way down in the dark and called for help.

Team call-handlers made use of the SARLOC system, which utilises smartphone technology, to get an accurate position for the pair. With guidance over the phone they were then able to locate a stile with a grid reference disc on it to further confirm this evidence.  With this evidence, a small fast-moving party of Team volunteers was able to ascend quickly to find the couple, provide them with dry clothing, and walk them down the Minffordd path.  Everyone was safely off the hill by 8.15pm.

Vulnerable Teenager Missing Near Dolgellau

At around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday the Team received a request from North Wales Police for assistance in the search for a vulnerable teenager missing from near Dolgellau.

A party of volunteers turned out to provide back-up and support for a Search & Rescue Dogs Association Wales trailing dog, and to provide tracking capability. The searches deployed from the place where the missing person was last seen, but an absence of good scent items for the missing youth meant that the trailing dog could not be effective, and trackers only found footsteps from what they believed to be the initial searches made by the teenager's carers. In the absence of more concrete evidence to go on, the Team was stood down at 5:45 a.m.

The search was resumed at 10:00 a.m. the same morning, but the Team was shortly stood down after the youth was located elsewhere.
