Two walkers lost on Cadair Idris

23/3/2015

At about 3:00 p.m., call handlers from Aberdyfi Search & Rescue Team were made aware of two walkers lost in poor conditions near the summit of Cadair Idris.

The two ladies, from Middlesex and Oxfordshire, had reached the summit but shortly after beginning their descent had become disorientated in the poor visibility, wind and rain. They had called for assistance having found themselves on a small ledge on very steep ground, which turned out to be the cliffs above Llyn y Gadair.

A hasty-party of four local volunteers from the Team started up the mountain while others gathered and made ready to take up more equipment as required.

The ladies had become increasingly distressed about their situation, and with improving summit weather conditions a decision was made to attempt to reach them by helicopter. As the advance party were nearing the base of the cliffs, Rescue 122, the RAF Sea-King from RAF Valley, made an approach to assess the situation, and was able to quickly winch the pair aboard.

Having evacuated the women down to Ty Nant at the base of the mountain, 122 kindly returned to collect the Team hasty-party which meant that everyone was down from the mountain by 5:00 p.m.

The pair, a man and woman from Warwickshire, had started their ascent earlier in the day but shortly after summiting the lady had twisted her knee. They had carried on as best they could, but the injury resulted in significantly slower progress, and eventually they found themselves benighted and unable to proceed.

Unsure of their exact location, search-parties of volunteers from the Team were dispatched up two likely routes. The walkers were quickly located and assisted down the remaining section.

Everyone was down off the mountain by 11:30 p.m.
