Missing Person at Llanfair Caereinion

24/7/2013

On Tuesday morning 23rd July, Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team was called in to assist with the search for a vulnerable missing adult at Llanfair Caereinion near Welshpool.

The 64 year old lady, suffering from the early stages of dementia, was a regular and very fit walker, but had failed to return home the previous day. She was last sighted at 3:00 pm and a confusing pattern of sightings in widely spaced locations around that time was hard to decipher.

The search was co-ordinated by Dyfed-Powys Police, and involved Police search teams along with volunteers from Aberdyfi, Brecon, North East Wales and South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Teams. The Brecon Team had worked through Monday night conducting vehicle searches of the roads in the area, and on Tuesday, search parties on foot started sweeping the lady’s normal walking route. By around 6:00 pm this area had been cleared and the focus of the search shifted to Llangadfan, where an earlier cluster of sightings had been reported.  As search parties were getting into place, news came through that a member of the public had found the lady, alive and well near LakeVynwy to the
North.

Heat Stroke on Ffordd Ddu

9/7/2013

The Team was contacted by North Wales Ambulance Service, who requested assistance in attending to a walker on the Ffordd Ddu, an ancient trackway running across the headland west of Cadair Idris. The casualty, a member of a Duke of Edinburgh award group,  had succumbed to the effects of the weather whilst on expedition. The hot, humid conditions, linked with the physical demands of a heavy rucsac had caused the onset of Heat Stroke, a potentially very serious condition. Whilst team members were mobilizing the Helimed helicopter was able to reach the site and assess the casualty. Cooled and treated with sufficient fluids she made a quick recovery and stayed with members of the expedition supervising staff.

Scree-Fast Walkers on Cadair Idris

7/7/2013

The Team was called to assist two walkers who had become stuck on steep and loose ground near the Foxes path on the north side of Cadair Idris near Dolgellau. A number of Team members were already out on the mountain making the most of the fantastic weather and they, together with a Snowdonia National Park warden on duty in the area, were directed to
the walkers' location. The rescuers were quickly on scene to offer assistance and escort the pair onto the more stable ground of the path, from where they were able to continue their day out.

On Saturday afternoon the team was alerted to an injured walker on the peaks above Bwlch Oerddrws. The walker, one of an outdoor education centre party, had slipped and sustained an injured ankle, and the team was readied for a stretcher evacuation off the hill. In the event perfect flying conditions and an available aircraft meant that the walker was airlifted to hospital by a Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley, and the team were stood down.
