Lost Walkers on Cader Idris

23/7/2020

Shortly after 11:00 a.m., call handlers from the Team were made aware of three walkers lost on Cader Idris.

The three male teenagers had walked from Barmouth the previous day and had camped near the Pen y Gader summit.  Waking to poor weather they took the wrong path from the summit and descended to Llyn Cau rather than follow the Pony Path back the way they had come.  Finding themselves beside the lake and unaware of the path along the shore, they took to their emergency shelters and called for assistance.

With an intermittent mobile phone signal at the back of the cwm, the call handler eventually contacted the party to confirm their position and to encourage them to move along the north shore of Llyn Cau to find the Minffordd path.  Two Team volunteers were dispatched to intercept the the group.  With some encouragement the walkers were able to find the route along the lake side and were met by Team members on the Minffordd path just below the lake outflow.  The group was accompanied down to Minffordd car park from where they arranged a lift back to the north side of the mountain.

Two Walkers Lost on Cader Idris

18/7/2020

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. , call handlers from the Team were made aware of two walkers lost on Cader Idris.

The two women, in their early 20's and from the Midlands had started out from Minffordd, but somewhere on the summit plateau their map was lost, they consequently took a wrong turning, and ended up coming down Foxes Path. The Phonefind protocol was used to locate the pair via their smartphone, and verbal description was given to get them onto the main Foxes path. They were encouraged to keep clicking the link to help call handlers monitor their progress while a couple of Team volunteers climbed up from Gwernan Lake hotel to meet them and escort them down.

High water levels in the Llyn Gafr outflow and other streams pushed the walkers off course just as they were about to meet with the rescuers heading up hill. Fortunately, the updated Phonefind location alerted handlers to this issue and a texted request  to hold position was sent as the rescuers were directed  to locate them.

Everyone was safely off the mountain by 10:00 p.m.

42 year old female with leg injury, Lake Vyrnwy

11/7/2020

Shortly after 4;30 p.m. call-handlers from the Team received reports of an injured walker at Lake Vyrnwy.
The 42 year old female was reported to have fallen "near highest point of waterfall" at the north end of the lake, but all attempts to contact the casualty and informant failed.

As Team volunteers made their way to the scene to gather further information, a request for assistance from the Coastguard helicopter R936 was placed, as previous experience indicated  that the path at the side of the falls represents a steep and difficult stretcher carry.

A hasty party had just reached the casualty and started an assessment when the helicopter arrived on scene. The winch man was lowered to help assess the situation, and it was decided to winch the casualty aboard. Other members of the casualty party were escorted down off the hill by team volunteers.

Everyone was safely off the hill shortly after 8:00 p.m.
