Shortly before 1:00 p.m. Team call-handlers were made aware of an injured mountain-biker at Dyfi Bike Park near Pantperthog.
The 46 year old male had come off his bike and had sustained head and back injuries. He was attended by paramedics, and Team volunteers helped transport him to the waiting air-ambulance. Everyone was off the hill by 4:30 p.m. Shortly after 2:00 p.m., the Team was made aware of a man with a leg injury in the crags above the A470 at Bwlch Oerddrws.
Two males from the Preston area were plane spotting and photographing fast jets on the "Bwlch" section of the Mach loop when one stumbled on steep ground, injuring his left ankle. Unable to weight-bear on the ankle or move safely across the steep ground the men called for ambulance assistance. This request was passed on via North Wales Police as a mountain rescue incident. A hasty-party deployed to the casualty location to undertake an initial assessment of the injury, and further Team volunteers made their way to the location with a stretcher and additional kit. The casualty was treated with pain-relief and splinting of the injured limb. The man was then loaded onto team stretcher before being wheeled and sledged across and down steep ground to the carpark. Due to declared waiting time for an ambulance, the casualty was loaded into the car of his friend to be driven to hospital for further assessment and treatment. Everyone was safely off the hill by 4:45 p.m. Shortly after 3:00 p.m. Team call-handlers were made aware of a woman with an ankle injury near Lake Vyrnwy.
With the Team already deployed at Bwlch Oerddrws, a request for assistance was placed with our neighbouring teams at South Snowdonia Search & Rescue and North East Wales Search & Rescue, and inbound Aberdyfi volunteers were also diverted to the second incident. In the event the Welsh Ambulance Service crew was able to access the woman and the incident was stood down. Shortly after 4:00 p.m. Team call-handlers were made aware of a collapsed walker on Cader Idris.
A group of 6 walkers had come across a lone male in his sixties beside the Minffordd path just below Llyn Cau. The man was unresponsive and not breathing. The group called for help and started CPR which they continued for an extended period under the guidance of an ambulance call-handler. This was advised because further medical support was on the way. Two team members arrived on foot at about the same time as Coastguard helicopter R936 reached the scene. Further team members were also airlifted to support the operation. The paramedic winchman was able to administer appropriate advanced medical interventions and CPR continued for a further 30 minutes, but with no response evident the decision was made to cease resuscitation attempts. The casualty was flown down off the mountain and placed in the care of waiting police officers while team volunteers and the group of walkers made their way off the mountain. At around 3:15 p.m., Team call-handlers received notification of a woman with a suspected fractured or dislocated ankle on Foel Fadian to the south of Machynlleth.
Team volunteers were dispatched to the location, and our casualty carers were able to stabilise the injury with splinting and to administer pain relief. The casualty was transported by stretcher down the hill to a waiting team vehicle, and following further assessment of the injury, she was driven to the road-side. Friends were then able to transport her to hospital in Aberystwyth for further assessment and treatment. Everyone was safely off the hill by 6:45 p.m. At around 6:45 p.m. Team call handlers received a request from Brecon Mountain Rescue to assist with the search for a high risk missing person in Glandyfi to the south of Machynlleth. Due to associated travel times for Brecon, it was agreed that Aberdyfi SART was best placed to coordinate the response and Brecon Team was stood down.
Team volunteers, along with members of South Snowdonia Search and Rescue Team and SARDA Wales search Dogs joined H.M. Coastguard Helicopter, RNLI (Borth and Aberdyfi) along with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue as part of the multi-agency search response. Shortly 10:30pm the missing person was located by Aberdyfi team members and was assisted back to the road. The Team stood down at 11:00 p.m. Shortly after 2:00 p.m. Team call-handlers were requested by the Welsh Ambulance Service to assist with in injured walker at Dolgoch Falls near Tywyn.
The walker had sustained an ankle injury in a slip near to top of the popular waterfall walk. The woman was assessed, and the injured foot splinted, before she was transported by stretcher down to the bottom carpark. Having been assisted into a vehicle, she was transported to hospital by family members for further assessment and treatment. Everyone was safely off the hill by 4:30 p.m. Shortly after 9:00 p.m. call handlers from the Team were made aware of a party of walkers lost on Cader Idris.
The group of 3 had set out for an early evening walk and were nearly finished when they realised a set of keys was missing. Retracing their steps they made their way back up the mountain to search the ground, and in the process split up. Although well equipped and with good torches, two of the walkers lost the path and found themselves on broken and steep ground on the south ridge, at which point the alarm was raised. As Team volunteers made their way to meet them, the party had managed to reunite and were making good progress down the Minffordd path when the two groups met up. Having established that the walkers were warm and well lit, everyone continued down off the mountain and had reached the carpark by 11;00 p.m. The keys were with the car, so might well have been dropped right at the start and reunited with the car by a fellow walker. Shortly before 3:00 p.m. the Team was requested to assist North Wales Police in the rescue of an unconscious male from steep ground near Llwyngwril.
Being on the beach margins, the incident was passed on to H.M. Coastguard, although Team volunteers proceeded to the incident to assist. In a joint effort with NWP, HMCG and Barmouth RNLI inshore lifeboat, the man was evacuated via sea, and transported to hospital for further care. At around 12:30 p.m., call-handlers from the Team were made aware of a group of walkers lost but uninjured on Cader Idris.
Using smart-phone technology, the location of the three men was established remotely, and they were advised of their position and given a suggested exit route. Their progress was monitored remotely, and by 2:00 p.m. they reported themselves safely back on tarmac. |
